Drop Forging for Copper Alloys

Drop forging is the metal forming process that shaping metal and increasing its strength. In drop forging, an upper die is forced against a heated workpiece placed on a stationary lower die, and the billets will fastly filled the cavity of dies under the workforce of high pressure. Then, the billets become a forged blank that has the desired shape as designed. Finally, remove the flash under trimming dies to achieve a net shape drop forged part.

By drop forging, different sizes of components can be produced, and it can even produce net shapes that do not require secondary machining, or even near net shape with very little machining. It is quite economic for large production runs.

Notes:
1. Drop forging uses successive dies to first roughly form product, provide a semi-finished form to the product, and then to form and blank or trim the flashing from the formed object.
2. The dies used in the drop forging must be made from extremely strong and tough materials in order to withstand the impact loads and temperature of the process.
3. Almost all the metals (steel, aluminum, copper) can be pressed by drop forging process.

Drop Forging for Copper Alloys

Among all the metals drop forged, copper is a common type used in closed die drop forging process. Reasons on drop forging for copper alloys:
  • Corrosion-resistant metal, while drop forged steel may eventual leak and break because of corrosion damage.
  • Lightweight, which makes it easier to be drop forged (saving on labor costs) and also easier to extend over long stretches without supports.
  • More environmentally friendly than plastic material because it consists of naturally occurring metal, whereas plastic creates a large amount of emissions during its manufacture.
Drop forged copper components have been used for decades for valves, flanges, pumps, and compressors were caustic chemicals would normally tarnish other metals. While copper castings and weldments (more traditional copper manufacturing techniques) are common, they cannot replicate the metallurgical advantages of drop forging.
