6061-T6 Forged and Machined Aluminum Part

For its low density, drop forging for aluminum alloys can always be used to make metal parts with light weight. Generally, aluminum alloys are divided into casting alloys and forged alloys, and are best suited for different applications. Forged aluminum alloys, such as the 6061 alloy, are widely used in drop forging process to creat specified shapes and dimensions. During the process, the billet is heated through an induction furnace and forged using a closed die drop forging process.

Among all the forged aluminum alloys, 6061 is one of the most commonly used aluminum grades in the world. Whether hot or cold forging, 6061 is the choice for a wide range of applications, including automotive, motorcycle, aerospace, and so on. So, what makes 6061 so versatile? Like with any grade, it starts with the makeup of the metal. Its major alloying elements are magnesium (1.0%) and silicon (0.6%). This makes it highly resistant to corrosion, stress, and cracking. This also means the grade features good formability and weldability. Pls note 6061 is not an alloy that is traditionally cast due to its low silicon content affecting the fluidity in casting.

Why T6 Heat Treatment for 6061 Forged Aluminum Part?

T6 temper has been treated to provide the maximum precipitation hardening (and therefore maximum yield strength) for a forged 6061 aluminum part. It has an ultimate tensile strength of at least 290 MPa (42 ksi) and yield strength of at least 240 MPa (35 ksi). More typical values are 310 MPa (45 ksi) and 270 MPa (39 ksi), respectively. In thicknesses of 6.35 mm (0.250 in) or less, it has elongation of 8% or more; in thicker sections, it has elongation of 10%.

Machinability of 6061-T6 Forged Aluminum Part

The term“machinability”refers to the ease with which a metal can be machined to an acceptable surface finish. After drop forging and heat treatment, it is common that 6061-T6 forged aluminum parts will be moved into machining process to achieve closer tolerances or higher surface finish.

Three factors affect the machinability of 6061-T6 aluminum forgings. The first factor is the machining process, which includes the type of equipment, the cutting tools, cutting speeds, feed rates and lubricants. The second factor involves the material—whether the compositions are within its range, and whether there exsites any defect after forging. The third factor is the material processing, which involves the alloy chemistry and heat treatment, the forging process controls, the reduction ratio and die design, and whether direct or indirect presses were used in forging the aluminum.

6061-T6 forged aluminum part has adequate machinability characteristics in the heat-treated T6 condition. In CFS Forge, we have individual machining workshop to machine 6061-T6 aluminum forgings. Our machining capacity enables our company to provide finished (forged and machined ) 6061 aluminum parts, and our customers can get a compeleted solution once cooperated with CFS.
