Precision Forging vs Precision Casting

Precision Forging is a process where metal is preheated and pressed into desires shapes with forging equipments in different tons.

Precision Casting is the metal forming process by puring metal liquid into shell mold, cut the products from the tree assembling after cooling, and remove excess material for final product by polishing.

Why Precision Forging?

After forging, the inner grain structure is refined. So precision forging process creates products with better strength than those manufactured by any other metalworking process. 

Forging takes advantage of the metal’s natural grain flow, shaping the grain flow to conform to the contours of each part’s unique geometry. This grain flow contouring is called flash, and it will be removed by trimming dies. So normally, precision forged parts will require at least two pairs of moulds.

Precision Forging can provide net shape products, which reduces further machining job and thus, machining cost can be saved. 

Precision Forging VS Precision Casting

Both precision forging and precision casting are the metal working processes for precision metal components, after precision forging or casting, second machining can be avoided or reduced, and we can obtain near net shape or net shape products directly. Most of the time, we can make the same part with both these two precision processes. Here we will take about what precision forging differs from precision casting:

1) Different metal forming way: Precision Forging is a process where metal is preheated and pressed into desires shapes with forging equipments in different tons. 2) Less defects: With precision forging, the steel grain is flowed by the force of high pressure, so almost no defects will produce. However, when precision casted, it is common that casting defects are inspected out for the operation errors when desighing the sprue gate and pouring.

3) Precision Forgings are stronger. Precision castings do not have strengthening benefits yielded by precision forgings. Precision Forging surpasses precision casting in predictable strength properties and produces superior simultaneously more ductile and resistant pieces with uniform quality assured across the production run.

4) Production of precision forgings is more flexible and cost-effective. Some special performance precision castings require expensive materials and process controls, also lead time is quite long. By comparision, precision forgings are examples of forging processes that adapt to various production run lengths and enable shortened lead times.

5)Precision Forging give better response to heat treatment. When precision casted, melting and cooling processes are not well controlled, alloy segregation may occur, this will result in non-uniform heat treatment, and thus to afftect the straightness of finished parts. But, precision forging will response to heat treatment in a predictable status, and offer stable and better dimensions.
